Hitting During the Off-Season in Cold Climates
The winter off-season is a great time to work on your hitting to improve for the coming spring and summer baseball season.
But, you should know that the polyball and polyball pitching machines are designed to be used in moderate temperatures.
When the weather turns, and the north winds begin to howl, you will need to look for another place (other than the backyard) to continue to practice your hitting.
The ideal alternate places to look to hit with your mini polyball pitching machine are the basement or heated garage during the cold winter months. While basements are heated with the rest of the house, garages are often not heated which poses some challenges.
Cold Temperatures
The pitching machines themselves, are designed for moderate temperatures, and the soft plastic polyballs if cold, or stored outside in the cold, will become hard and more likely to fracture and crack when hit with a bat. So it is important that during the winter, you:
Store the machine and the balls inside - in warm room temperatures.
You can use most pitching machines for short hitting sessions in an unheated garage (for instance) during the cold winter months if you observe the follow points:
- Pre-heat the area prior to your hitting sessions. There are a number of temporary, clean, heating devices that when used properly, are good for bringing the temperatures up in a garage (or other enclosure) prior to using the room.
- Keep your hitting sessions brief. Depending on how you heat up the garage or (other enclosure), you may not want to run the heater during the hitting session. If that is the case, heat the room up prior to your hitting session, and get your hitting done before the room cools back down.
Your pitching machine (and the polyballs) are made to be used in moderate temperatures. During the cold winter months, you can always heat up the garage for hitting sessions. If you are not able to heat up a garage, remember, there is always- the basement.
