Machine pitched
You don't need a training partner to pitch with a polyball pitching machine.  The Personal Pitcher Pro will allow you to hit curve balls or fast balls (at four different speeds) at your own convenience and timing.  You can hit indoors (in a garage or basement) or outdoors (backyard or schoolyard).  See Personal Pitcher.

The Ball

The mini size polyball is used with the Personal Pitcher (or with a live pitcher) which tests and exercises the hitter's batting eye and hitting contact.

Live Pitched
Live pitched stickball batting practice allows for more versatility and fills in some gaps in the stickball batting practice routine.  Live pitched stickball batting practice allows you to “mix” the pitches, allowing the hitter to work on some things that he can’t do with a pitching machine.  It does require a training partner to do the pitching though, so it may not be an everyday routine. A good mix is to do some machine pitched and some live pitched batting practice.  See Live Pitched Polyball Batting Practice

Practice At-Bats
If you have one or more hitters, they can rotate and take turns “at bat”.  Use a real game count of 4 balls and 3 strikes.  The pitcher is trying to get the hitter out.  The batter is practicing his hitting plan by sitting on a pitch with less than two strikes, then converting to a two strike hitting approach if the count goes there.  See Simulated At-Bats

Hitting plan
The hitter steps up to the plate with his hitting plan in place.  He is looking for either a fast ball or off speed pitch (based on how he thinks the pitcher is going to try to get him out), sitting on his pitch, he swings with authority when he gets it, and takes all other pitches - until (and “if”) he gets to two strikes.  See Hitting With Less Than Two Strikes and  AHA Hitting Practice

Two strike hitting approach
With two strikes the hitter has to hit the pitcher’s pitch, whatever it is as long as it is a strike. This requires a “reaction” type of approach to hitting.  This is the “see it - hit it” approach, where a shorter swing is necessary.  The hitter works on a short swing with two strikes.  Getting the bat barrel on the ball is the main focus, not so much, driving the ball deep. With two strikes the hitter can take a longer look at the pitch with his shortened swing and practice hitting the to the opposite field. See Two Strike Hitting and RHA:Reactive Hitting Approach

The Grobat is a hitting stick used for serious batting practice.

The Grobat comes in four different lengths (30",32",33", and 34") which can be weighted with insertable weights from the weight pack (the weight pack consists of 2, 3, and 4oz weights).

Unlike backyard stickball where the bat is long and light, stickball batting practice requires the use of a stick bat that is the same length and weight as your game bat. This insures that your timing is challenged as well as your hitting contact with the small bat (and small golf ball size, polyball).
