"keeping your shoulder in there"
Rotational Hitting Mechanics
The great hitters in baseball produce powerful swings by using their torso and whole body to swing the bat. By rotating their body, they produce bat speeds of 75 mph and even 80 mph and higher, smoothly, sometimes so smoothly that it looks like there is little effort being used.
In order to rotate the body the hips "open up" and at time of impact the batter's belt buckle should be facing the pitcher - NOT HOME PLATE. Often, you will hear a well meaning coach instruct a hitter that his "shoulder is flying open" and that he must "keep his shoulder in there". (Usually the only problem when a hitter is instructed as such is that the hitter's timing was off and he was "early" on this swing) Should a hitter keep his shoulder "in there" and hit with his belt buckle facing home plate? Keeping the hips closed as such will take the body out of the swing producing an arm only swing with little bat speed.
The arms alone are not strong enough to swing a drop 3 ( or less as is the case with many wood bats), with any real bat speed.
In fact, in good rotational swing mechanics the front shoulder is so not "in there" that it is pulling away and directly opposite of home plate at time of impact ( see above picture). And by the time the swing is completed and the follow through finished, the front shoulder (because of the rotation of the whole torso) will be actually facing the catcher.
In conclustion, many well meaning coaches will instruct hitters to do things that they may have read in a book somewhere that are contrary to good hitting mechanics used by Major League hitters, be polite, but quietly ignore the advise when it is about "keeping your head in there". Rotate your hips and drive the ball.

Ted Williams used to state empathically "the hips lead the hands" while describing the correct sequencing of a baseball swing.
The shoulder cannot stay closed and "in there" if the hips are open and belt buckle facing the pitcher. It is impossible.
At point of impact: The hips are open and belt buckle is facing the pitcher
