Pre-set Speed and Variable Speed Controls
The Advantages of Each
Pre-set pitch speed settings
The Personal Pitcher (Standard and Pro) and Sandlot Slugger utilize pre-set pitching speed settings that are automatically calibrated to a pitch speed or setting with the flip (or turn) of a switch. Flip the switch up, and the machine will pitch at a certain speed, flip it down and you will get another pre-calculated pitch speed or pitch type.
The advantages to pre-selected switch speeds or pitches is that there is no need to fiddle with the speed settings to get it right.
With pre-selected settings, you just flip the switch and presto - you have the curve ball or slider. There is no need to tweak the left motor a bit slower, and the right motor a little faster to get the ball to break. All you have to do is flip the switch and it is done - for most users this is just what they want and need.
The downside of pre-selected pitch speeds and settings is that you are limited to just those speed settings and motor speeds. If you have a small confined hitting area, you cannot for instance, slow the pitch speed down below the factory pre-set speed to enable you to hit at very short distances.
Another limitation to pre-sets, is that you cannot tweak the machine if you wanted to. While many like the no-fuss attributes of flipping the switch for your curve ball, others may want to slow that curve ball down or make it break a bit more - or less, by manipulating the motor speed directly.
Variable speed fader knobs
The variable speed machines are useful for those who want to precisely control the pitch speed, to pitch at closer distances, or to refine the curve ball to their liking.
A bigger breaking curve is obtained by slowing down one wheel more than the other . A sharper curve or slider can be achieved by a closer speed ratio between the two motors. (Note the Personal Pitcher Pro has both: a curve ball pre-set and a slider pre-set selection).
Variable speed machines are a little more flexible in selecting the curve ball speed too. The pre-select machines will give you one speed on the curve (and slider too) and you will need to move closer or farther from the machine to manipulate the reaction time for the curve or slider - which works fine - for most people, most of the time.
In some cases you may want the ability to tweak the speed of the curve down , because of restricted pitching distances. The variable speed knob allows for more selectivity - for those who want or need that.
