Baseball Hitting: Home Runs, Home Run Derby and Bat Speed
There is a common misconception that the pitcher supplies a lot of the "power" in the hitting of a home run. Let's look at the factors that contribute to the impact of a batted baseball.
The average MLB bat speed is commonly quoted at 75 mph. The average MLB bat weight is somewhere around 32 oz.
The average MLB fast ball is commonly quoted as being 90 mph. The MLB baseball weighs 5oz.
Using a simple formula for force of M x V = force
The batter is supplying 32 (mass) x 75 (velocity) = 2400 (call this a batting power factor)
The pitcher is supplying 5 (mass) x 90 (velocity) = 450 (call this pitching power factor)
The total force at impact = batting power factor + pitching power factor = 2850 total impact force
From these simple formulas you can see the batter supplies 85% of the force or power of the batted ball impact, and the pitcher supplies 15%. The difference of the pitching power factor from a 90mph fastball to a 100mph fastball is minimal (450 - 500).
Not surprisingly, we saw gigantic homeruns in the homerun derby during the all star break. Did you realize that the batting practice pitchers were throwing around 55mph "fastballs"?
Homerun power is for the most part supplied by the bat speed of the batter. If you wish to improve on your ability to hit for power and to hit home runs - you need to develop your bat speed.
