Strength training for any sport involves muscle stimulation (i.e. the actual "work out") to encourage the muscle to get stronger. Just as important is the often neglected aspect of rest or recovery. As the athlete gets stronger it takes longer for him/her to recover. The principle of a variable recovery period is a newer concept in strength training. The final element is progressive overload. You should continue to get stronger and thus be able to hoist heavier weight. Show me a trainee who lifts the same weight - the same number of reps every workout and I will show you a trainee who has reached a plateau and is not progressing.
