There are a lot of choices when it comes to a back yard pitching machine, but there is only one type that does not require an expensive batting cage - the polyball pitching machine.
Baseball or softball batting cages are very expensive, take up a lot of room, and are a hassle to cut grass in and around, and maintain. They are a requirement if you are going to hit a baseball or softball in the backyard. But there is an alternative......
Polyball Pitching Machines
Polyball machines pitch a plastic ("poly") ball, either a mini golf ball size or baseball size (some will convert and pitch a softball size) polyball. One huge advantage of the polyball machines are the limited flight of the ball - at no compromise of quality pitching and quality pitches.
The poly ball machines can throw fastballs, curve balls or sliders - and most have automatic ball feeders which will feed the machine (no need to have a training partner just to feed the machine). The most appealing attribute of these machines is that they are only a fraction of the cost of a baseball pitching machine (AND THE BIG BATTING CAGE THAT A BASEBALL MACHINE REQUIRES).
Hanging a temporary catch net
Lightweight free hanging netting can be used for smaller tract housing type backyards to block the ball from traveling into the neighbor's yard. You can drape or temporarily tie the netting to a tree or post or hook it to the house or garage while using the machine, then remove it when you are done.
If you would like a cage -anyway with the polyball machine, because you don't want to pick up balls in the back yard, then an inexpensive (about 1/20th the price of a full baseball cage) polyball batting cage is available. You don't need to ruin your backyard with a baseball batting cage structure sitting in a large portion of the yard. The remote control option allows the batter, or anyone else, to turn the feeder on and off from any distance. The pitching wheels continue to turn so that when the feeder wheels are turned on the pitch is up to full speed. There is a bypass switch that silences the remote and allows the machine to operate in its standard continuous feed mode without use of the remote. There also is a light on the front of the machine, in addition to the normal pitch light, which indicates if the feeder is on or off.

The Personal Pitcher
The original and arguably the best value in a pitching machine. There are two versions of the Personal Pitcher: the Pro and the Standard model.
The Pro model throws fastballs at 4 different speeds, with a top speed of 55mph. It also throws curve balls and sliders.
The Standard model is for those who don't need curve balls. It will throw fast balls at 4 speeds - but no curves or sliders.
Both models have an automatic ball feeder that feeds the mini polyball from a 100 ball hopper. There is a pitch indicator light which will let the hitter know that a pitch is about to be delivered.
