RHA: Recactive Hitting Approach

If you want to be able to hit with two strikes you need to practice your two strike hitting approach.  If you batting practice is nothing more than straight fast ball after straight fast ball (right down the middle), you will never develop a good reactive hitting approach which requires you to “see the ball and hit the ball”.

Two strike hitting must be practiced with live pitching.  You need to get an assortment of pitches  - all mixed well so that the hitter can’t sit on the pitch.

You can do two strike reactive hitting practice with polyballs .  It is much easier on the batting practice pitcher’s arm if you use polyballs.  See Live Pitched Polyball Batting Practice.

Reactive Hitting Approach
This is two strike hitting practice. Like practicing free throw shooting in basketball, two strike hitting must be practiced regularly. Think about it. If a hitter can hit .300 with two strikes, he will most certainly hit .300 with less than two strikes and he will be free to sit on pitches and really drive the ball with less than two strikes. Practice two strike hitting until the hitter is proficient at it - and then practice it some more ....

Two strike batting practice is something a hitter must constantly work on so that he is comfortable hitting in a two strike situation. The rule for two strike hitting is: You must swing at any pitch thrown for a strike. So, with standard "RHA"  two strike batting practice the pitcher will throw fast balls, curve balls, and change ups - unannounced - and the batter practices reactive hitting. The batter's objective is to 1) hit any pitch thrown for a strike , 2) not take a strike, and 3) not swing and miss - which would be ... strike three. The batting practice pitcher calls third strikes if the batter takes a strike

Start with a 2-2 count
A good "twist" for RHA practice is to start with a 2-2 count. The batting practice pitcher can waste a pitch and throw a chase pitch or set up his second pitch with the first.  Starting with a 2-2 count will give the batter a feel for the pressure of real two strike hitting.

Major League hitters as a group (excluding pitchers), hit under .200 with two strikes. They hit over .300 with less than two strikes as a group (excluding pitchers).

If a Major League hitter wishes to hit over .300, he would need to work on his two strike reactive hitting to get that two stike average up above.200.
