Polyball Batting Practice
for Pre-Game BP
I don't know how it is in all parts of the country (or the world for that matter) but in my "neck of the woods" you cannot do pre-game batting practice on the game field, but you can hit polyball BP in the outfield or somewhere off the side of the field. Often teams will do soft toss hitting into a net, but I like the idea of hitting a pitched ball for batting practice prior to the game. Pitched balls train the eye to follow the pitch and demand proper timing. I simply prefer live pitched pre-game batting practice. The pre-game polyball batting practice routine my team follows is basically like this:
- Warm up with straight change ups that the batter gradually warms up his swing to.
- Two strike batting practice in which the warmed up hitter is now hitting reactively any pitch thrown anywhere for a strike.
- We finish it off with all fast balls where the hitter tries to drive the ball as he would hit with less than two strikes.
This way we cover a broad range of hitting by warming up to slow stuff (remember you never want to neglect hitting slow stuff - I never want our players complaining that they could not hit the pitcher because he "threw too slow") move on to both hitting approaches while hitting curves as well as fast balls and change ups for a good overall mix of hitting.
We do this with regular baseball sized polyballs, some half and half for our curve balls and some all perforated for our fast balls and change ups. I like the regular size for outdoor hitting because they carry a little better for pitching outside and they are a little less affected by wind than the smaller mini balls.
One of the weaknesses of hitters all the way up through high school is that they do not hit breaking balls very well. They don't because they don't practice hitting breaking pitches. Incorporating polyball batting practice into the batting practice mix will make it possible to get a lot of breaking pitches and pitches with movement to practice hitting. Pre-game polyball BP will warm the hitters up to tracking and hitting breaking pitches in the pre-game routine.
