The Personal Pitcher Pro
Wiffle Ball Pitching Machine
Three great advantages of the the Personal Pitcher Pro over a baseball pitching machine are: 1. It allows one person to train by himself without the need for a second person to feed the machine. 2. The wiffle balls are easily contained by lightweight netting and can be used indoors regardless of the weather outside providing you have a large enough space in a basement or garage to devote to a hitting area. The machine can be used outdoors of course too. 3.The mini wiffle ball requires better focus and eye / hand coordination to hit than a regulation baseball or softball, affording the hitter sport (hitting) specific “vision training” and coordination training. Another benefit of the Personal Pitcher is that you get all this at a fraction of the price of a baseball or softball pitching machine. The Personal Pitcher makes owning a pitching machine a realistic option for just about any baseball / softball player. Let's look at the Personal Pitcher Pro models' features.
Pitch indicator light
This is unique to the Personal Pitcher. The Personal Pitcher was the first to include this device, most of the other polyball pitching machines (of any size polyball: baseball, softball or mini polyball) do not have this feature. The Pitch Indicator Light will grow brighter as the pitch is about to be delivered. This prevents the hitter from being caught off guard by the pitch delivery. After some repetitions the hitter will learn to treat the indicator light like he would a real pitcher’s wind up, and learn to time his stride with the light.
Pitch speed
There are four preset fastball (straight pitch) speeds that are selectable by selection settings of two toggle switches. The curveball and sliders are one selectable speed only. If there is any downside to the Personal Pitcher Pro it is the one speed selection only for the curve balls and sliders. On the other hand, the one option switch selection for curves / sliders allows the hitter to hit the same consistent curve balls and sliders without having to play around with the two wheel speeds to get it right.
Curve balls
The curve balls (and sliders) are selectable and can be left or right handed. The quality of curve on the curve ball is excellent. It has a good sharp break. The slider is harder and has a smaller break - a bit like a “cut” fast ball that tails either toward or away from the hitter, depending on whether it is a left or right hand slider.
Maintenance
You do have to do periodic maintenance with the Personal Pitcher Pro. The most important maintenance item is to lubricate the bushings located on the bottom of the machine. If you neglect to do this the pitch speed and accuracy will be reduced as friction will slow down the pitching wheels.
Portability
A bucket to hold the balls, the machine and a tripod are all the pieces needing to be transported if you want to bring the machine to the school field etc… One person should be able to carry all three pieces without too much trouble.
4 hour battery
A AC adaptor comes with the Personal Pitcher Pro Charging requires about 1 hour of recharge for every 1 hour of use. It is important to unplug the adapter once the required charging is complete. Leaving the AC adaptor continually plugged into the machine will shorten the life of the battery
Pitch accuracy
Most pitches are within the strike zone when pitched within the normal working range of the Personal Pitcher. The occasional “ball” serves the (unintentional but desireable) purpose of keeping the hitter from swinging at every pitch on “auto-pilot”.
Ball capacity
The hopper on the top of the machine will hold 100 mini wiffle balls.
Automatic Ball feeder
For those who are not familiar with baseball pitching machines, the “feeding” of a baseball pitching machine is done by a second person who must individually place each ball into the pitching machine. This is true with most baseball pitching machines. The Personal Pitcher has an automatic ball feeder which enables one person to load up the hopper, turn the machine on, then go take their place in the batter’s box (you will have about 5.5 or 8 seconds to get there - unless you let the first pitch go before stepping in). The hopper and ball feeder make the Personal Pitcher a “one person” operation.
The ball feeder will automatically feed pitching wheels from the hopper. There are two pitch delivery intervals which are selected by a flip of a toggle switch. The fast interval will feed a pitch every 5.5 seconds. The slower interval will feed a pitch every 8 seconds.
Warranty
The two year manufacturer’s warranty covers replacement parts or repair of the machine.
