How to Hit a Baseball Further
If you want to separate yourself from the rest of the crowd, learn to hit with authority. Not only will you have more fun, but you will be more valuable to your team. When I go into a league meeting, I notice lots of .400 batting averages on the board. It is a noteworthy accomplishment to hit safely at such a high percentage. But, the guys who usually get the attention when it comes to voting, are the players that can hit the ball out of the yard. To every one power hitting high school hitter, there will be ten guys who hit .400 - with no home runs. The power hitter is in scare supply. The power hitter gets the attention.
I am not saying you should forget hitting for an average. To the contrary, you should continue to hit for average, AND hit home runs (and doubles etc… power hitting is better defined by extra base hits and slugging percentage, than purely home runs). Know when to “RIP“, and know when to “stroke” the ball up the middle. If you do both, you will hit for average and for power.
Train to hit a baseball farther
It won’t come by accident, you must train for it. Home run distance is not a result of some magical spot on the bat. The formula is simple: Mass X velocity (squared).
The Two Components:
Mass
A heavier bat will normally (as long as bat speed remains the same) hit a ball farther. If you swing too heavy a bat, you won’t be able to control it, or you will have to start your swing too early to get the bat moving. You can only go so far in bat weight, then it becomes counter productive
Velocity
This is where you should spend some time training. Bat speed is what separates the “men from the boys”. Just as pitching velocity increases as a player moves up the ranks in organized baseball, so should bat speed.
Elements of a Well Designed Bat Speed Program
Hitting mechanics
If your swing is poor, often your bat speed will be too. If you cast out the bat, if you lunge, if you let your hands float or move in a linear manner to the ball, you will lose bat speed. Hitting with efficient swing mechanics will help to increase your bat speed. See The Final Arc Dvd and hitting program
Train the fast twitch muscles
Very much like Olympic training, over and under training will help to improve your bat speed. Over weight training: using a (slightly) heavier bat in a well designed routine will help strengthen bat swing specific muscles. Over speed training: using a (slightly) under weight bat will train the fast twitch muscles to fire explosively. See Bat Speed Program
Use a radar for feedback
You must get feedback on your swing training. If you simply guess, you will wander in the wilderness without direction and never reach the final destination of better bat speed. You must train with intelligence. Know what your bat speed is, know what the bat speed is on each and every swing in training. You do this by incorporating a bat speed radar with your bat speed training program. See Swing Speed Radar
Batting practice
You need to go out to the schoolyard or practice field and with a batting practice pitcher to groove some balls (usually “middle in” and “up”) and you need to find the home run “groove”. Play a little “home run derby” and try to hit the ball out with every swing. This will train you to hit the ball with the best trajectory for maximum distance. Train to hit the ball hard - and long in these hitting sessions. This is “home run” specific training. You will need to do more than just this type of batting practice for a well rounded batting practice program. See Personal Pitcher and Grobat for how to improve your hitting contact using the mini size polyball and a small diameter practice bat. Remember, good hitter hit for average AND for power, you must train for both.
Strength training
I didn’t know you could break a bat over your knee - at will, until I saw Bo do it. I didn’t know you could run up the outfield wall after making a catch, until I saw Bo Jackson do it. Bo Jackson was a superb athlete, unlike anything baseball had seen up to that point. If you can combine a superb athlete with superb baseball skill……. You will have one unbelievable baseball player.
I am a believer in strength training. I am not an expert on how old a player must be before they begin strength training, I will leave that to the experts. But, at some point in time (age), and using a good weight or strength training program, baseball players will improve their ability to hit the long ball with strength training.
