The Stance

The Placement of the Feet
There are three options when it comes to placing the feet in a batting stance:  the stance (and feet) can be either open, straight away, or closed.

Closed stance
You don’t see many MLB hitters using a closed stance anymore.  I don’t like the closed stance, because I think it prevents the hitter from seeing the ball. The hitter has to really “look over his shoulder” with a closed stance. While a closed stance may keep the hitter from pulling off of the ball, it will also hinder a good rotation too.

Open stance
This stance is used by many to help them see the ball better. It is a bit easier to use both eyes in an open stance.  This stance is used by right hand hitters who have a dominate right eye.  In other stances (closed or straight away) the right eye (of a right hand hitter) can be blocked, or partially blocked by the hitter’s own nose.

With this stance the hitter starts with the open stance and then closes it to a straight away stance during the stride.

Note: Using a slightly open stance, will help a hitter be on time with a hard throwing fast ball pitcher.  It is easier to open the hips from this position, and you are already part the way there from the  get go.

Straight away stance
This is the best of all worlds for most.  You aren’t locked up or looking over your shoulder as with the closed stance, and you are not wide open (and needing to close back up) as with the open stance.  There should be not trouble for left eye dominate right hand hitters using this stance, since the left eye does most of the work, and the nose is not blocking here.
